Carlan K. Yates, MD

Dr. Yates has a primary emphasis in arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries, but he also spends a great deal of time serving as the Head Team Physician for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He considers it a great privilege and honor. Caring for athletes has been a very special part of Dr. Yates’ sports medicine practice, even though the majority of his patients are normal, everyday, active people. Dr. Yates enjoys caring for high school athletics, he describes it as the essence of sports medicine to him. He has had the opportunity to care for numerous Olympic athletes, cared for those at the Olympic Festival, went to the Winter World Games and was a physician at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Dr. Yates’ and his staff provides a “concierge practice” experience, where every patient feels like they are the only one in his practice. He tries to take an extraordinary amount of time with each individual, as much time as they need. This allows a high level of education and communication. He takes a great deal of pride in making each patient feel special. Every patient who is operated on receives a DVD of their procedure. In addition to the DVD, his patients are given his office, home, and cell phone numbers, should they have a question or concern.

About Dr. Yates

Dr. Yates was born in Frederick, Oklahoma. His parents were a great influence – his father, a minister – his mother, a teacher. His father’s ministry work led their family to move regularly. In addition to Frederick, Dr. Yates has lived in Enid, Claremore, Yukon, and subsequently Oklahoma City, as a result.  By the age of 16, Dr. Yates had committed all his resources to being an orthopedic surgeon. His parents were a big influence, instilling the belief of “service to others” as the key to happiness and the purpose of life.

While he was a high school student. Dr. Yates had some unfortunate experiences with orthopedic surgeons. A series of surgeries had been initiated on his knees, which were really unnecessary, in retrospect. One surgery led to another, complication after complication, and at one point he had to drop-out of high school for a significant amount of time. He was homebound, in a cast from his bellybutton to his toes and he was angry at life. He took his experience with orthopedic surgery and combined it with his parent’s emphasis on service, and channeled both into becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
