Quality Counts

by Mark Galliart, CEO

David A. Garvin proposed in his Harvard Business Review article, "Competing on the Eight Dimensions of Quality," eight critical dimensions or categories of quality that can serve as a framework for strategic analysis: performance, features, reliability, conformance, durability, serviceability, aesthetics, and perceived quality.1

At McBride, we respect Garvin's view on quality and understand what it takes to sustain excellence for our patients. As an orthopedic specialty hospital, commitment to quality equates to superior outcomes for patients. Since we adhere to quality as a core value, it was not a surprise McBride received a 5-Star Rating from CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) Hospital Compare again this year. The 5-Star distinction represents McBride's ongoing efforts to deliver a level of care unmatched in the state. Year after year, McBride does what it takes to achieve this incredible rating, so patients are able to maintain trust in McBride and the services provided by its amazing physicians and staff.

For patients new to McBride or unfamiliar with the CMS distinction, I wish to share background information. 5-Stars is the highest award level attainable by a healthcare organization via Hospital Compare. McBride's overall hospital quality star rating includes a variety of the more than 100 measures reported to Hospital Compare, divided into 7 measure groups or categories: Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care, and Efficient Use of Medical Imaging.

Hospital Compare was created by CMS in collaboration with organizations representing consumers, hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, and other federal agencies. It provides information about the quality of care at over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals, including over 130 Veterans Administration (VA) medical centers and over 50 military hospitals, across the country. Patients can use Hospital Compare to find hospitals and compare the quality of their care. Information includes: what did other patients think about their hospital stay based on doctor and nurse communication; did hospitals give timely and effective care; what are rates of readmission, complications, mortality (death) rates for certain conditions compared with national rate; is hospital careful about giving people too many tests.

A 5-Star Rating affirms McBride as a member of an elite group of healthcare organizations in the state and nation which means McBride stands ready to meet your healthcare needs and deliver the highest level of quality care available to you and your family. Thank you for supporting our ongoing efforts and trusting us at every turn.
